review 1: I think this was actually a 3+ stars. In the small English Village of Nether Monkslip, Vicar Max (an ex-MI5) gets involved in the murder of a new resident. The murdered man, an obnoxious retired actor/screenwriter, who treats his young wife abominably is found dead on his bed with a small cut behind his ear. The town is changing from it's small farming village to a more upscale community. Max is falling in love with Awena, who is interested in healthy foods and her own religion. The writers' square is a bickering group of want to be writers, and most of the gossip takes place in the postoffice and the hair dressers.
review 2: Pagan Spring is the third book in the Max Tudor Mystery series. Max is the vicar of the church in a small English village, full of
... moreyummy interesting people! When someone is murdered, Max, being an ex MI5 agent steps right into the investigation. The story, except for taking place in modern times, just rings of those delightful old English village mysteries. Since there are only four seasons in the year, I will be disappointed if there is only one more! less

Well, it got a little better. Still pretty uneven. I think I could stand to read more, but won't.

An enjoyable series....not all that gripping...but...a nice read in between others.

Good read. One of the best of Malliet's series.
