review 1: I love the Windhams a lot and have mostly enjoyed each siblings' love story. Once again, we get Burrowes' favorite trifecta--children, scents/smells and secrets--that has become her signature.Up to the half way point, I was enjoying the romance between Joseph and Louisa because it had that easiness and naturalness that Burrowes is so good at. She has a way to draw up the suspense and while she has a tendency to drag it out too much and the 'secrets' sometimes thin, but the solid writing and characterization tend to overcome that. Here, her skills don't quite come up to par mainly because Ms. Burrowes gets way over the top and silly with Louisa's AND Joseph's secrets, and it was a tad hooky towards the end. This is one of the rare times that Burrowes does more 'telling' the... moren showing us elements of both our lead's personality and character. While it wasn't rushed, there was a sense that some things were left out, especially in the 'secrets' for both our characters, which weren't really explained and very much glossed over. This, I've noticed, is also a tendency of Ms. Burrowes, to sort of make a big deal out of something and then sort of brush it under the proverbial rug. I wasn't entirely taken or fully satisfied with the resolution of the tension of the plot. I also did not like being dropped in the middle of an establish event for a character and then no explanation for the next fifty or so pages. It's not only confusing, it's rather off-putting and while she does ten to get back to it and it's usually a major element of the plot, it's awkward. Ms. Burrowes is such a talented story teller and writer, a very powerful combination but there were too many issues for me to overlook and overall, I just wasn't at all swept over by Lady's Louisa's story.
review 2: I loved Sir Joseph!! He is a titled lord with no wish to be titled. He is a former soldier who fought for his country and was taking care of several children who were victims of the war. He is quiet and unassuming but also very knightly. He is intrigued by Lady Louisa who is very intelligent and has no use for the gentlemen who court her for her dowry and family ties. They meet at several dances and it is sweet to see his side and her side of the courtship. They are very attracted to each other. He feels he is not good enough for her and she has a desperate secret that she feels would ruin her future and whomever she marries. It is noted that both have secrets that they are worried future spouses would not appreciate yet both are intelligent and down to earth types of personality. She is compromised and Sir Joseph comes to her rescue after she turns down his first choice for her. I did enjoy this book, it was a sweet romance and I would recommend it. less
