review 1: Lucas Denning is another recurring character in some of the Windham novels, and his flirtation with Eve Windham an ongoing thing. I enjoy Lucas, but for some reason I could not warm up to Eve. I wept for her as a child recovering from devastating physical and emotional injury. Through her eyes it was another fascinating insight into how differently eight members of a family can perceive the truth of that family and their own roles in it so differently. I was touched with how Lucas' confidence allowed Eve to embrace herself again, especially her love of horses. It is obvious that Burrowes is a horsewoman and loves horses by the small details that gave me a glimpse of all the subtlety and artistry involved in caring for, training and riding them. The scoundrel in this novel ... morewas pretty obvious early on, and it frustrates me when a writer makes intelligent characters conveniently blind when it is normal for them to be perceptive. This novel had some very good elements, but it never quite gelled into a good novel.
review 2: Lady Eve has sworn to never marry because of a fall from grace when she was quite young; Lucas Denning, Marquis of Deene has also sworn off parson's mousetrap. He is more interested in suing his brother-in-law fro custody of his niece, but he needs money to pursue this. I liked both Eve and Deene as they grow to love each other, but there were abrupt twists and turns and Eve's fall from grace is never fully explored. I found the book frustrating because of that. The romance is charming, but the book is not. less

Not the best of the Windham Sisters stories, but still a good one.
Good but....didn't catch me as the other books have done.
Liked it.
