review 1: Frustrating finale to the Windham series. Jenny is a painter, an incredible painter, who's lived unconventionally. She had a tryst with a man at 16, took art lessons, and even sketched a man nude. Elijah is a renowned painter who leaves his family after a fight with his father and stays away 10 years trying to get into the Royal Academy of Art. In fact he's the male Jenny drew as a nude. The first half of the book is dull. For a woman how supposedly lives scandalously under the radar, and a man who threw away everything to paint, they are surprisingly boring in both their interactions thoughts. There's no spark to them, no color, and I felt nothing for either of them. It's only half way through that we finally get a feel of why Jenny is despondent and frustrated with lif... moree. She wants to go to Paris to study art. We know this because she says it a thousand times. Elijah doesn't support or not support her, he's ridiculously neutral and adds nothing to the debate.I think what frustrated me the most was the manipulation of the family. All the family appear for Christmas which became impossible to follow because I can't remember all these people but that's a different story. The Duke and Duchess have no respect for her painting calling it "little pictures" and other such things. Her siblings do respect her work but toss it aside as unimportant because there is a man in the house. In fact the family has no use for her except as one they need to marry off. Then out of left field we find out that Jenny doesn't want to go to Paris to paint, she goes out of guilt. Huh? So now the Duke and Duchess are all lovey, lovey, yes we're proud of you blah, blah. But they continue to manipulate her planning a trip overseas so fanciful they know she won't except but instead decide to get married...which she does even offering to give up her art.I lost all respect for the Windhams after this book and am glad the series is done as I'll never be willing to revisit this family.
review 2: I love all things Grace Burrowes, and I liked this book, but it seemed it took way too long for Jenny and Elijah to get together. Jenny's obsession with studying art in Paris as some kind of redemption for her beloved, deceased brothers was tiresome. As a conclusion to the Windham series at least as far as all siblings are concerned, it fell a little flat for me. And I was really looking forward to reading this! The other Windham stories were much, much better. I'm still a fan! I move on to the newest Lost Lords books with great anticipation! less
