review 1: I am reading this all out of order, but I am reading them as I find them. I started with Douglas, which seems to be a different series but with all the same characters. The actual 1st book is "The Heir" and this is the 4th book in the Windham series. There are 10 children all together so there will be 4 more sister books. Sophie is the eldest at 27 and unmarried and the hero is somewhere in his late 30"s so I like it right away. Also there is an adorable abandoned baby, and the hero Vim knows all about babies as he helped raise his half brothers and sisters. So if you love babies and men taking care of them, this is the book for you. The part I didn't like was that they both kept their identities secret which led to too many easily resolved misunderstandings. The brothers ... moreshow up and bicker and they are also just adorable. Am on my search for books 2&3.
review 2: Not a typical warm Christmas tale with snowfall fights and gathering of mistletoe, instead this story is about 2 people who don't enjoy Christmas time. Lady Sophie is the daughter of Percy and Esther and has always been the child who does everything right. Sophie is 27 and has never been attracted to a man. She spends her time caring for strays-animals mostly, but in this book she bonds with a baby. Sophie connived to be away from her family this Christmas. Feeling lonely, sad- still missing her deceased brothers Sophie stays home by uncharacteristically lying to her parents. When she takes a servant (returning home with an infant) to catch the stage she holds the baby while the mother goes to use the bathroom. Sophie is naive and doesn't realize the mother has abandoned the child until Vim a business man helps her with the crying child. Caught in a snowstorm of epic proportions he travels to her home to help her as she has absolutely no idea how to care for an infant. Vim loves babies and knows a lot from his younger step sisters. He stays the night and he and Sophie play house for the next few days. They fall in love with the baby and with each other. The book was great until eventually the storm eases somewhat and her brothers arrive to take her to the family's country estate. Sophie and Vim has of course eventually given in to their feelings, but both has hidden their true identities. He thought she was a higher class servant because she was alone, cooked and baked. She thought he was just a businessman because he told her stories of travel everywhere. Vim was returning to help his aging aunt and Uncle and resentful of having to to back to a place that had some sad memories. He has a scandal years ago that kept him from home. After Valentine, St. Just and her other brother figure out the situation they plot to keep the risque events secret- easy because of the storm. They travel to Morelands- the estate via Vim's homestead first. Giving the couple time to figure out what they want. The ending is okay but kind of a let down after such a good beginning. Eventually they do have a reason to enjoy the Christmas Season once again. I read this out of order and wish I could have read them in order but it didn't matter but Vim's brother (not seen in this book) figures in sister Maggie's future. Small world with only a few degrees of separation. less
