review 1: "The Silent Land" was a masterpiece in my opinion. Therefore anything different from that doesn't work as well for me. Having said that, I found this book to be entertaining but perhaps a bit uneven. The basic plot is enjoyable enough, the 2 affairs David has are well constructed opposites of one another. The political subplot almost derails the book though. The Ghost and the Boy subplot never fully worked for me, but I'm not sure why. The ending was very satisfying, and a nice surprise when they meet Luca and Terri. SPOILER ALERT I suppose? Ultimately I liked the book, but didn't love it.
review 2: I am a little disappointed by this book. I have read other books by Graham Joyce and I know what a fine science fiction/horror author he can be. It's the story of a
... more British young student, who in his summer break decides to take a job in a hotel at the seaside. His parents are surprised by his decision because that's the same place where he was found wondering alone at the age of 3 years and where his natural father was found drowned. What forces compel him to go there? Who are the rest of the people who work at the resort? Read it and come to your own conclusions. less

A wonderful evocation of the summer of 1976 in Britain, and another ***** yarn from Graham Joyce.

Good coming of age story, but a little sparse in character development.

I worry when a book is described as sexy.
