review 1: I think you have to be a very specific kind of person to appreciate this book, and I'm not that kind of person. I can see why someone would like it, but to me it was just messy. I did like it for a few moments when I thought it was going to become all mysterious, but then it didn't and I just finished it to make sure there really wasn't any more to it. Okay, the ending had some kind of deeper philosophical meaning, but that part in particular was very tedious to read. No, it just wasn't my cup of tea.On another note, I was going to give this some praise for featuring a bisexual character, those are rare, but as I got further and further into the book I realised how extremely hetero- and cis-normative is was. And then I got to the part where he describes a person as a "tran... moressexual". Not a transwoman, not a transgender man, but simply A Transsexual. Seriously?
review 2: Unfortunately, this book didn't quite live up to my expectations. The premises were interesting but I found them to be "underexploited", and the writing style was confusing at times (though that might be partly because of the translation). The main character is however quite likable, as well as some of the others.I think my problem was that I expected something dwelling more into the "demons" mythology, whereas this book is focused on the main character and his problems. In the end it kind of reminded me of Nick Hornby's work - had it been presented to me in that style I would probably have enjoyed it more. less
