review 1: Well this is the first book I've read that is set in Skegness! Are there, for that matter, any other books set in Skegness? The Year of the Ladybird wonderfully evokes the long hot summer of 1976, and in particular, the dying institution of the seaside holiday camp, with all its manufactured jollity and frayed edges. Where I feel it is less successful is in its plot (particularly the central 'ghost story' conceit, which is fairly obvious from early on) and in the relationship between the main characters.
review 2: What a wonderful read to end the summer! This isn't really a ghost story in the traditional sense (if you've read any other Graham Joyce, that comes as no surprise), but it is about the things that haunt us. It evokes that first magical summer wher... moree you finally start to realize just who you are. Joyce is never heavy-handed or preachy and the result is a dreamy work that feels very real. Highly recommended for those final contemplative days of summer. less
