review 1: High in the mountains above a picturesque French ski resort, Jake and Zoe Bennett are alone on the early morning slopes when a nightmare crashes down upon them. With a sudden roar they are buried under a powerful flash avalanche. Miraculously, the young couple are able to dig their way out from under the snow - only to discover the world they've known has been evacuated and is devoid of any living soul. The town is empty. Restaurants stand frozen in time, with uncooked meat and vegetables left on the countertops. Cell phones and land lines are useless.Jake and Zoe are left to face a terrifying situation alone - cut off from the world and trapped by a massive storm, with an even larger, catastrophic avalanche threatening to bury the town itself. They find that complete isol... moreation brings fear...but also beauty. Zoe and Jake have the world to themselves, a vast playground with no rules, and yet the silent land they occupy also begins to deliver unsettling events neither one can ignore. As the days wear on, they are forced to confront frightening possibilities as they attempt to survive, to understand the love they share, and to escape the ghostly landscape they now inhabit. This is my second book by this author and I really enjoy his style and innovative ideas. This one has only 2 characters that I never totally warmed to. They were in love, but I didn't really feel it. They kept secrets from each other, one that was significant and I felt it would have been shared earlier if they were really in love. Joyce does a great job of describing the abandoned hotel and winter wonderland they were trapped in. I figured out the twist early on but the atmosphere lends itself to an unsettling and eerie read. 3.5 stars.
review 2: Quotable:Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by the hand, Nor I half turn to go, yet turning stay. Remember me when no more day by day You tell me of our future that you plann’d: Only remember me; you understand It will be late to counsel then or pray. Yet if you should forget me for a while And afterwards remember, do not grieve: For if the darkness and corruption leave A vestige of the thoughts that once I had, Better by far you should forget and smile Than that you should remember and be sad. --- Remember , Christina RossettiThey drank a beer at the bar. Jake served it from the compression taps. Wanting to shift the subject away from the mysterious phone call, he started talking about the taste of the beer. He said he would remember the taste of it for her, but when he said hops and barley she said that meant nothing to her. So he said: Acorns, malt vinegar, sugar, autumn leaves, copper pennies, grief, weak sunlight, laughter, the crust on a loaf of bread … until she said, Stop, I’ve got it.Two people in love don’t make a hive mind. Neither should they want to be a hive mind, to think the same, to know the same. It’s about being separate and still loving each other, being distinct from each other. One is the violin string, one is the bow.’He was the sort of bloke who always wore short-sleeved shirts, whatever the weather. It showed off his tanned and hairy arms, but Zoe knew it wasn’t vanity that made him wear short sleeves: it was that sleeves just got in the way and needed to be rolled up all the time.Everything we are we have built from every thing we have done together. If we drank a glass of wine and we said'Everything, our whole lives, has been a series of delights and griefs that are gone for ever; gone unless we remember them for each other.’ less
