The Horus Heresy
review 1: Mechanicum is the ninth instalment in the dramatic and tragic Horus Heresy science-fiction series. The book, through the writer Mr. Graham McNeill, explores Mars and the order of the Mechanicum, it's fall in unity after Horus Lupercal's decision to fight against the Emperor and describes the genesis of Dark Mechanicum.Mr. McNeil once again proves that he is one of the best writers in the Black Library. He does well in describing the amazing creations and inovations of the Mechanicum and their current research before the Death of Innocence and the civil war. He also perfectly emphasizes the importance of honour, humanity, organisation and belief in their old ways.At the end where the civil war destroys much of Mars and the forges that create the weaponry and science of the ... moreImperium, Mr. McNeill truly created a perfect emotion of tragedy and sorrow at such a loss of so much technology, but also highlights the last blazes of glory of some of the loyalist's orders against the Dark Mechanicum. Their sheer will to do the utmost damage and die gloriously in the Emperor's name will leave the reader in an emotional status. However, the book is not without chips and flaws. The main characters, the Adepts, are interesting and have an interesting chemistry, but the apprentices, especially Dalia Cythera, seem to be too childish and naive for being in a place such as Mars. As her and friend's goal expands, her character is awfully Frodo-like, too angelic and innocent for such a time in the galaxy. Also, the romantic link between Dalia and Caxton is rather weird when you consider the fact that the members of the Mechanicum are largely machines. All in all, it is a very good read and very well describes the next step in the rebellion against the Emperor, and the destruction of one of the most wondrous places in the Imperium. Definitely can recommend!
review 2: "Mechanicum is the first book in the Series not to focus on Primarchs or Space Marines. Instead, it is about the civil war on Mars, which takes place around the time of the start of the wider Heresy conflict. The planet is the seat of the Mechanicum, a Terra-allied technocracy responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of all Imperial military and civilian technology. Planning his imminent campaign against the Imperium, Horus obtains the secret allegiance of highly placed Mechanicum Adepts, including that of Kelbor-Hal, Fabricator General of Mars and the technocracy's leader. They plot, and eventually carry out, a coup d'etat in order to eliminate those on Mars who are loyal to the alliance with Terra and to the Emperor. The ensuing war will determine which side in the struggle will receive the Mechanicum's crucial support." less

I love the Horus Heresy series but that one was painful unless you are a die hard Mechanicum fan

Good, but ends in a typical fashion . . .
