review 1: This was a great new version of the Superman story. All of the familiar characters were there but their back stories had been tweaked, some of them being very different. The central plot worked well and Superman's story worked well through flashbacks. The only part I was a little disappointed in was one of the stories near the end of the book. Considering this is book 1 in the action comics new 52, I felt that the time travel storyline could have done with a bit more of an explanation as characters made an appearance who are not familiar to those who have not read stories from the wider Justice League universe. This made this particular plot a little confusing as it seemed to expect prior knowledge. Other than that it was a great read.

... morew that this new superman series was written by Grant Morrison, I got a bad feeling about this. And... I was right. Everything I've read by Morrison so far was barely comprehensible to me (with the exclusion of his JLA New World Order which was the only his work that I actually liked) and more often than not full of weird and creepy (see Zurr-en-arr Batman) or simply uninteresting (Bat International). I know he's a big name in comics, but who let him write Superman?! He'd be more suitable for JL Dark or some similar title. This book isn't as complex as his previous works, so I rate it as OK.But whoever decided on the new direction for Superman has no understanding of who Superman is as a person. It's possible to reboot Superman's origins by staying true to his personality (see Man of Steel, Superman: Birthright and Superman Elseworlds titles), but this Harry Potter lookalike with too much moping about how alien he feels (although he only recently found out about Krypton, has grown up on Earth since being a baby and has many friends) in this book is not Superman. Even Red Son Superman was more true to the character. Making his parents dead also makes him way too similar to Bruce Wayne/Batman, but Batman and Superman should be similar like night and day. Moreover, Clark without Lois, due to copyright issues, is like bread without butter - boring and difficult to swallow. Also, I don't really care that again the same copyright issues got Supes out of his red underwear, but the collar on his new armor suit gives him a too military feel (the Man of Steel movie version of his suit is better IMHO).Why change Superman and his origins so much? What was wrong with a few flashbacks or some origins issues for the newbies, a change from tights to a Kryptonian suit for plausible reasons and on with the action? Until the next reboot of the DC universe (which if the past is anything to go by should be in about 10 to 20 years) I'll consider the New 52 Superman to be some kind of an Elseworlds/parallel universe version. Incredibly disappointing take on the Superman story. I'm more than likely done with this series.
