review 1: Fantastic detective graphic novel from a man who writes them better than just about anyone. Rucka told a perfectly paced story that not only introduced the character but hinted at a diverse backstory to both her and the people in and out of her life while not giving too much away. It really left me wanting to know more about Dex Parios. Not to be understated, Matthew Southworth's artwork compliments the story and the characters perfectly.
review 2: I saw this for sale on Comixology and thought I'd give it a try. I've read a little Queen and Country and thought it was decent even if it didn't really grab me like I hoped. I liked Stumptown a little better, but I would have to say that it didn't really hook me like I hoped. This is a crime/detective story wi
... moreth a little more fleshed out and interesting protagonist than usual. Dex has faults and she has a brother with down syndrome that she has to take care of. I thought these details were some of the best parts of the story because they made it feel real and made you want to see her succeed. I won't spoil the plot, but it is fairly normal detective/crime stuff. To me, the story isn't exactly noir because Dex does a lot of things out of her own determination (as opposed to feeling trapped or being put in a really bad situation with only one way out). This is disappointing because I love noir and would have preferred if Stumptown went more in that direction. The one really bright spot is the art and coloring which are rough and a little simplified in a cartoony way, but very nice throughout this entire story. I think anybody interested in crime or detective stories will enjoy this one even if it is probably not going to be their new favorite book. less
