review 1: I'm a sucker for a good mystery. When I saw that Greg Rucka, whose work I've enjoyed over the years, was getting such good press for Stumptown I couldn't help but pick it up. In recent years comics series like Criminal or Scalped have kept me up at night turning pages to see how the story will resolve so my hopes were high this title would join those ranks.Sadly, while I liked it, it's not as good as those other books in my opinion. While the art work is first rate, particularly the coloring which really gives this book a lot of punch, the story is just kind of by the book detective work. Often a rote mystery story is completely forgivable if the detective in the story is so compelling you can't help but follow them anywhere. In this case the detective, Dex, while an ... moreinteresting character is not really very charismatic. Frankly, she comes across like an more pathetic version of Jack Nicholson in Chinatown. While capable of some excellent detective work Dex is consistently beat up, shot, and generally manhandled throughout this story. While I appreciate some battle damage in my detectives it's also nice to know they can bad-ass it up when the need to. No evidence in this book that Dex rolls like that.I suppose for a first story arc you can appreciate not being given all of the dirty little secrets of a character but I think Rucka is holding his cards too close to the vest on this one. Dex really seems one dimensional and while it's intriguing that she cares for her mentally handicapped brother and appears to have a well earned love/hate relationship with the Portland Police Department none of that really made her the kind of protagonist that compels you to turn the page.Given the limited amount of time in the day I have to read while I enjoyed this book I will likely pass on future volumes. Frankly, why read this when I can enjoy another volume of Criminal or the extremely satisfying Scalped?
review 2: I love me a well-written, flawed lady detective. (see Jessica Jones in Alias) And Dex, the lead character in Stumptown, is most definitely those things. Rucka has a reputation for writing stellar women characters and with Dex he certainly lives up to that reputation. And the art by Matthew Southworth fits the story and characterizations perfectly. And I love the coloring too.I will definitely be reading Volume 2 of this series! less

Not so sure what to say about this, but it's a solid book with solid art. Solid, solid, solid.
