My boss told me about this series. She said it’s one of her favorites, and one she rereads with her kids. I can see why. Angie Sage has made quite a world in the Septimus Heap series.
On a snowy night, Septimus Heap is born. He is the seventh son of the seventh son, born into a Magykal family, and much is expected of him. Or it would have been, if he survived. Septimus was proclaimed dead by the midwife, and taken from his mother, Sarah.
Silas, Sarah’s husband, on that same night, found a newborn baby girl in the forest. He gets home just in time to see the midwife leaving with his deceased Septimus. He presents the baby to Sarah, and she becomes part of the family.
Ten years later, and the baby girl, Jenna, is grown up and a part of the Heap family. But her idyllic existence is about to be shaken. The Heaps find out who the mysterious baby is: the missing Princess, who hasn’t been seen since her mother was murdered ten years earlier.
Now, there are Darke Magykal forces trying to find Jenna. She flees with her family, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, and a castle guard, known only as Boy 412. Together they fight to survive and find out why Jenna is being hunted. They meet many creatures, both good and bad, along the way, and are faced with a chilling question: what really happened to Septimus all those years ago?
I’m an avid Harry Potter fan, so I can’t say this series is better, but based on book one, I would say it’s certainly up there. There’s adventure and magyk, strong family ties, and a ruthless villain to be stopped. Plus all the exciting spells and magykal creatures you could want.
There are six more books in the series. I’m only on book two, but I’m excited to know what happens next.
