review 1: So I am finally getting around to catching up on some older reads of mine that I never reviewed online and I thought I'd start with a book from one of my favourite "suspense" authors Gregg Hurwitz. Or She Dies AKA They're Watching is another twisted tale this time following Patrick Davis a man on the edge, with marriage and work issues, who discovers he is being watched. Emails arrive that seem to offer some hope of reprieve but as Patrick takes on the challenges he faces greater and greater danger. This is not my favourite of Mr Hurwitz's novels hence the 3* rather than 4 or 5 but it is still a great edge of the seat read. I felt the standard dropped somewhat towards the end and it all became a bit of a mish mash - but up until that point I was as intrigued as I ever am wh... moreen reading one of his novels. With the ending being less than satisfactory on a personal level I would say that this is definitely worth the time, but if you havent read Mr Hurwitz before then I would recommend starting with "Trust No-one" which shows this author at his best and leave this one for the time being until you have fallen in love with his writing.
review 2: Patrick Davis thought his dreams were finally coming true when his screenplay was purchased by a studio and put into production starring rising movie star Keith Connor. Instead, he soon found himself fired from the movie and being sued by the studio for assaulting Connor. Plus, his marriage to his college sweetheart Ariana is on the rocks. Just when life feels like it can't get any worse, Patrick finds a DVD tucked into his morning paper. On the DVD, he sees...himself. In his house. Someone is watching him. More DVDs follow, showing him and his wife doing routine, but private, things in their home. Before long there are mysterious emails instructing Patrick to carry out various missions, and he's assured that he won't like the consequences if he doesn't follow through. The first half of this book is a really fantastic, if completely silly, thriller, as the plot builds to show exactly why Patrick has been targeted with the DVDs and emails. It leads to a great "holy crap!" moment about midway through, when you realize what the goal of whoever is watching him was all along. The book remains really gripping for some time after that as well - seriously, I couldn't put it down - until the last seventy-five pages or so when all the motives become clear and it becomes more of a standard chase thriller. It has to be noted that the plot is completely ridiculous, but still, this is the kind of roller coaster book that is perfect for hot summer days when you just want to shut your brain off and enjoy the ride. less
