review 1: Finished reading, but it was PAINFUL. I picked it up at a used book sale because it sounded like it would be a good "beach read," but it is just so cliched and badly written (here are two examples of sentences from The Sculptor that were particularly cheese-tastic: "Cathy felt her heart melt, felt her eyes about to overflow in unexpected streams of joy." and "And after another evening of wine and lovemaking, the once shy art history professor could not help but feel a certain amount of pride that her feminine wiles had won out yet again.") that I can't go a page without rolling my eyes. Too bad, because the premise - a murderer who "sculpts" his victims so that they look like famous works by Michelangelo - is an interesting one. And it is set in Rhode Island, which is whe... morere I went to college, so I was enjoying reading about my old haunts. The problem is The Sculptor is supposed to be a thriller but it never turned thrilling. The characters are two-dimensional and nearly every sentence begins with "Yes," "No," or "And so," (possibly an attempt by the author to wax poetic?) so that at about 168 pages into the novel it feels less like reading for pleasure and more like slogging through word muck. The two main characters, Cathy and Sam, can hardly go a sentence without saying each other's names, which is just something you don't do in normal conversation unless you are trying to get each other's attention. And if one more character referred to Cathy as "the pretty art history professor" I was going to hurl. Ugh. If you are thinking of reading, don't bother. there are plenty of books out there that won't waste your time and brain cells.
review 2: This is almost a clone of Funaro's "The Impaler" - or rather, "The Impaler" is a clone of this one. "The Sculptor" was written first, and then wrote it's prequel, "The Impaler." I read "The Impaler" first, and really enjoyed it. I am really disappointed in this one, however. There are so many similarities that I felt like I was reading "The Impaler" all over again. Change a few names and you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the two. less
