review 1: Malcolm Gladwell opened his talk at the AAP annual meeting last week with a rave about this book and an interesting anecdote drawn from it. So I instantly read it and was not disappointed. It probably deserves five stars except that I found it a bit repetitive. Very accessible. supports a lot of what I have assumed about the practice of medicine today and introduced additional concerns I hadn't thought of previously about the pitfalls of excessive screening, treating minor abnormalities that may never have impacted quality of life, and the pressures that excelerate these practices.
review 2: It's about time someone wrote a book intended for an educated lay audience on this topic! The gist is that there is little to no scientific evidence that testing health p
... moreeople for every disease in the book actually makes for longer or healthier lives. The authors encourage people to decide for themselves how much testing is right for them and to think critically about the available evidence for screening. The writing is backed up by research and statistics by the wheel-barrow load. But kept from being dull and dry by personal stories sprinkled in the illustrate the science. less
