review 1: As many others have pointed out, this collection actually contains one short novel (encompassing about 20% of the pages) and 49 short stories. There are a few gems here, but the majority of the stories are merely run-of-the-mill science fiction seemingly plucked at random from golden-age magazines. I'm not sure what criteria was used to select the contents, but I don't really think quality was high on the list. I definitely wasn't displeased by the collection - but I was not particularly pleased either.
review 2: As this is a massive collection, I will post comments as I go and adjust my rating accordingly. 1. A Strange Manuscript found in a Copper Cylinder by James De Mille. REACTION: This short story was more of a short novel. with 50 short stories being i
... moren this book, this story alone occupies a quarter of this collection. it seems to go on for ages without end. it starts rather dull, gets interesting, then goes back to dull. for the last few chapters (yes, its a short story with chapters) it was almost as if i was wishing for it to just end. However, i know this is an actual book on its own. i hope this isnt the whole thing. even if there is more to it, i dont want to read it. REVIEW: the story follows a sailor who, by unfortunate event, becomes stranded. he discovers a new race of people who have different thought patterns. they think the exact opposite of normal human beings on death, philosophy, love, wealth, etc. to be poor was to be rich, to gain death was the ultimate blessing. the story itself was a rather interesting concept but was rudely broken up by commentary that was more or less not needed. this story would have been much better if broken down a bit. too much unnecessary details. 2/5 less

Some good, some bad, but I enjoyed the thorough sampling of the stories of that period.

Good variety, some goofiness and some almost-classics.

To me, this one is hard to get through. Tedious.
