review 1: Vaclav and Lena are both children of Russian immigrants in New York City soon after the fall of the Soviet Union. They meet at age five and are friends from then on, until Vaclav's mom discovers something awful about how Lena was being treated by the aunt with whom she lived, and Lena disappears into the child protective service world. In high school Lena gets back in touch with Vaclav, and they revive their old closeness. It's a nice story in a world which is hard to imagine in the current day.
review 2: The vernacular of this novel may not be for everyone, and the mystery at the heart of the action may not be mysterious enough for me, but darnit if I didn't love Vaclav and Lena with all the instinct my reptilian brain possesses. Logically, I can see the flaws
... more that make this a clear first novel (a truncated plot, with a somewhat obvious revelation). But my heart is so invested in Vaclav, Lena, and Vaclav's mother, that I don't care about the flaws. In particular, the finishing touches Tanner places on magic are breathtaking, as Vaclav proves that telling a story can be the ultimate act of love. Great characters, great debut. less
