review 1: This was a fantastic edge-of-your-seat read from beginning to end. It's hard to believe that anyone could have believed that a warm, salt-free ocean covered the top of the world and that nations raced to be the first to discover it. The USS Jeanette's voyage and ultimate shipwreck in the ice- and the crew's subsequent wanderings around northern Siberia- was appalling to read about. My only gripe with the book is that I wish the maps were all at the beginning- thumbing around trying to find them was a bit difficult sometimes- but I'm still giving it 5 stars.
review 2: The story of the USS Jeannette, as told by Hampton Sides, is an epic tale of courage and determination in the face of overwhelming odds. Drawing on the journals of Captain DeLong and co-captain Me
... morelville, Sides weaves a engaging and exhilarating tale of the ill-fated excursion to discover the North Pole. Sides spends considerable time introducing the reader to each participant, as well as establishing the mood of the times. By the time the Jeannette leaves San Francisco on its journey, the reader feels like they have known DeLong and others for years, and Sides intricate attention to detail allows the reader to feel that they too are on the ship. By the end of the book, the reader is left emotionally drained, having survived the incredibly arduous journey along with a portion of the crew. It was a deeply moving recounting. less
