review 1: I read Hannah Richell's second book before this one (The Shadow Year) and loved the suspense so much that when I saw she had actually written a book before this I just had to read it. I enjoyed it, the twists and turns really got to me and I couldn't put it down. I could really get into the mind of each character, understanding each point of view. I love Hannah's writing as it really transports you to the areas she describes so well (I live in Dorset so that helped as well!). I have to say that I did prefer The Shadow Year to this one but it was still an enjoyable read.
review 2: What an awesome book! Maybe it was the right time for me to read this book or maybe it just got me when I was vulnerable, but I loved it! The story is about a family with many secret
... mores and many sorrows, and how they all eventually managed to overcome all this and live their lives. An incident occurs in the book that forever changes everyone in this family of five. This incident touches each of them in a different way and sparks different reactions in each of them. It also tears apart this family as each tries to deal with the tragedy. This is a tragic story, but one that ends with hope. It is definitely a tear-jerker, and it was a book that will forever leave an impression on me. I found this book by accident in a wonderful little used book store in Lethbridge, Alberta. When I saw it, I thought it looked interesting and was worth a read, so I bought it for a ridiculously low price. It is a true gem and it is a book that I will never forget. The Tide family with all its foibles and mistakes will forever be locked in my brain. This is a book that I wouldn't have read if my eyes hadn't picked it out amongst the hundreds of books in this wonderful bookstore. Thank goodness for independent used book stores. And thank goodness that I went into this store on a particularly blustery day in January. less
