review 1: This is a fairly predictable family story set in beautiful Dorset. A tragedy splits the family apart and ten years later they are still struggling to deal with its impact. Told from the point of view of the three female protaganists and shifting back and forward in time, the reader comes to feel emotionally manipulated by the way secrets are witheld and then revealed. There are intimations that there is a mystery to be resolved but the ending produces no solution other than that life goes on and with hope and love we can survive its challenges.
review 2: Secrets of the Tides starts with a couple; Dora and Dan who have just found out they are expecting a baby, whilst Dan is pleased, Dora is concerned mainly because of her past. What then follows is a journey of
... morediscovery for Dora and for the reader as we slowly but surely find out the Secret of the Tides and how the whole family was affected. Richell has written a masterpiece and slowly drops hints about what will occur until you are left with a sense of dread as to what will happen next, but even when the past is revealed secrets still remain about the truth and gradually unfold right up until the very last page. Secrets of the Tides is about a family healing after their traumatic past and is written so beautifully that I laughed when they laughed and cried when they cried. The Tide family are a family that people can relate to, none of them are perfect, all have made mistakes which only endears the reader to them and their struggles. The journey is continued until the very end and I felt that everything was tied up neatly at the end. Overall this is a definite must read, a haunting and gripping read that will stay with you long after you finish the final page. less
