review 1: Hmm, I see this book got great reviews. I don't know why. The plot is overly complex to the point of being boring and the main characters haven't gotten any more complex since the earlier book. The MC seems to have no internal life. We know his thoughts but we don't feel close to him. Not ever. Same for his cop girlfriend. I wouldn't have read the book except I read a Chinese translation and I read it more for the language study than to enjoy a mystery. The manner in which in the story is written is so calming and relaxed that you tend to let your guard down a bit - and then there is a twist. I enjoyed the book and look forward the next one! less
