review 1: I enjoyed the other two books in this series, Bad Things Happen and Very Bad Men. The Last Dead Girl had a little bit of a different feel, and is set before the others (but read them in the order they were released). I found myself happy for a bit of a flight delay on a recent trip, so I'd be able to finish the book by the time I landed, and that tells me it's worth the five stars I gave it. If you enjoy mysteries and are looking for an author to follow, try Harry Dolan's work.
review 2: Harry Dolan does every thing right in The Last Dead Girl that JK Rowling did wrong in The Silkworm. This book grabs hold of you like a stranger in the dark and never lets go. At first, you're confused - your brain is slow to pick apart the myriad possibilities of what's happen
... moreing. It can't possibly be what you think it might be - what you're afraid it might be. Then you're gripped by terror - frozen in place and unable to put to either words or scream the threat lingering beyond the hand at your throat. The story like a peephole, allowing you to see into a world you can almost convince yourself doesn't really exist. Next comes realization, clarification - an acceptance of the situation. It does nothing to calm you but provides a reluctant compliance. You will follow the story until the end because now you must know, you have to know, how it all ends. When the hand finally releases you and you step back into the night, which seems darker, now, you feel less as though you've escaped it than were granted permission to leave it behind. The writing - so expertly crafted - will linger in your mind and hang around like an echo against anything you read immediately after. It's not until many nights later, with the story and its characters still fresh but fading, that your heart will return to its normal, even beating. But like any piece of worthwhile and elegant storytelling, you will not forget. The words will remain a blurry memory of something visceral and haunting. And aren't those the best kind of books? less
