review 1: Somehow, this book ended up in my kindle app. I don't remember downloading it, and I am fairly certain my 15 yo son didn't either. Having said that, I am glad that it was there. I was looking for a light and enjoyable read, and this book did make me laugh in several places. About the middle of the book, though, the story gets serious as it deals with Lottie and her mental health issues. The book was insightful and touching, it dealt with the issues without preaching and I think any teenager struggling with some of the same feelings would benefit from Lottie and her perspectives. I will definitely read the next one.
review 2: Lottie Biggs is (Not) Mad is a book that really surprised me. I expected a fun, light-hearted read, with nothing too serious sand instead
... more got a funny, amazing, heart-warming book that also addressed some pretty complex issues in a believable way that I think most teenagers will really be able to relate to. Mental illness (or as Lottie refers to it, “a mental disturbance of a significant nature”) is a difficult subject to write about, so I commend Hayley Long for addressing it in the way she did – I could really connect with Lottie, and felt for her as she struggled with her feelings. Lottie was actually a very funny character, and easily made me laugh out loud. The book was written in the format of Lottie’s Extended Writing Project for her English coursework (it was actually like a diary – but don’t let Lottie hear you say that), and was full of hilarious drawings and funny footnotes (actual footnotes!) slipped in here and there. I really enjoyed getting to know Lottie and I love the fact that her problems were portrayed in a way that any person could relate to. Lottie, with her snarky comments, obsession with Gareth Stingecombe’s manly thighs and love for Melody hair dye, was such a wonderful character, and while she could be rude and stroppy at times, I really liked reading about her, and was happy that she had great family and friends to help her through things. Her best friend Goose was a real life-line for Lottie – she really cared about her, and was there for her during the difficult times. Overall Lottie Biggs is (Not) Mad was a wonderful read that will always have a special place on my bookshelf. less
