review 1: I picked this up after browsing the children's lit section of our library, not knowing it was the fourth in a series. I was most interested in a young take on Pride & Prejudice. And this is brilliant. It took a couple chapters to grow accustomed to the change in perspective, but I also grew to enjoy each of the characters. Several books I have read recently have featured heavy discord with family, and with others. So, while I realize we need to read books about trials, it was a pleasure to read about families getting along and sharing common interests. It was a little overwhelming reading about the mothers, they all seem to occupied, but they felt real in having interests of their own, love and challenges with husbands and children. I look forward to going back and reading... more books 1-3. It is a brilliant idea to introduce literature in such way, making it real and accessible to young girls. (And making young boys intelligent and caring.) I hope to share these books with my daughter, and to have the same kind fun with her in five years, when she is a turning 14.
review 2: Winter of 3rd grade, I was casually looking on line, browsing through on National Geographic Kids when I stumbled upon something which if I can recall correctly was called "Dog Eared Books". At this discovery, I immediately started looking for titles that would be appropriate for 3rd graders, in hopes of impressing my teacher with my love for literacy, and stories about girls who also liked books. The next day I went to the library to look for the the first book: The Mother-Daughter Book Club, but stumbled upon this one, and being my simple, naive 8-9 year old self, I took it home only to find that it wasn't the first of the series. Nonetheless, I started reading and fell in love. You don't need to read them in order or read every single one in order to understand what's going on, but I'd recommend it. For girls in 3rd, 4th and maybe 5th grade, this is a delightful read, a realistic fiction book without too much drama. The main characters: Cassidy, Emma, Jess (Jessica) and Megan are delightful girls who deal with problems such as slightly nasty girls, dealing with friends who move away to another country, and making friends with the new handsome British boys who move down the street--and ultimately having a crush on them. Overall this book is very light and focuses on friendship, enemies-turned-friends and loss. less
