review 1: A great realistic fiction novel from the author of the Mother Daughter Book Club series. Truly, the main character, is a new resident of a quiet little New Hampshire town and feels all of the awkwardness associated with being in a new environment - especially as a middle-schooler. To complicate matters, she has to navigate the difficulties of having a father who is a wounded warrior. (Her father lost an arm in Afghanistan and also suffers from PTSD.) Frederick's treatment of the behaviors and issues that PTSD can cause is appropriate for the tween audience. Truly candidly discusses how different it is to see the different prosthesis in place of her father's arm, and how his personality has changed since his injury. As with the Mother Daughter series, there are mentions of ... moreother literary giants that play into the plot of the novel. E. B. White's Charlotte's Web introduces the mystery in the novel. An unsigned letter containing an odd message leads Truly and her new friends on a scavenger hunt through Pumpkin Falls to discover for whom the letters are intended. Eagerly awaiting book #2!
review 2: Truly Lovejoy is the middle child sandwiched between two older brothers and two younger sisters. Although she is just under 6 feet tall, she often feels overlooked except when she manages to say the wrong thing at the wrong time which is too often these days. Since her father returned from Afghanistan where he lost his arm to an IED, things have been awkward and uncomfortable and now, just when they had bought a house near her BFF cousin to settle down, the family is moving from Texas to New Hampshire. It's going to be a long winter for Truly, but once she makes some new friends and they find a mystery, she starts to see a way to make this work. A charming and completely believable story of a young girl, a loving family and a quirky town. less

Reminded me a lot of Moon Over Manifest. Wasn't fully convinced or enthralled by the mystery plot.
