review 1: This was the first novel by Helen Fitzgerald that I've read, and I'll definitely be back for more. 'The Cry' is a tense psychological thriller that delivers twists and turns, satisfying the reader right to the end. Some aspects were odd, like why a minor character was written in a first person stream of consciousness mode when the third person was used for the protagonist. That didn't quite work for me. The punctuation errors sprinkled throughout the narrative also grated. Minor gripes aside, this was a great read. Helen Fitzgerald has a quirky writing style that I enjoyed, and 'The Cry' contains a great character in Alistair Robertson, a conscience-free narcissist who lies shamelessly to get what he wants. I don't think many people will be disappointed by this n... moreovel.
review 2: I loved this book, even though the core event of the story is distressing. The couple at the centre of the story head towards the point of no return as they drive along a bleak freeway in the heat of the Australian summer, with bushfires on the horizon and warnings on the radio that it is now too late for affected residents to try and leave - echoing the situation in which the couple find themselves. The book revolves around a very harrowing event, and the way the characters react to this, and how it affects their perception of themselves and their relationships, is extremely well written,I found this a very emotional book to read. In particular, I thought that the description of the mother's increasing horror and despair as events unfolded was brilliantly done. I had no idea how this book would end, there were some great twists in this story and the ending came as a complete surprise. It was a book that stayed with me for a long time after I had read it, and I am looking forward to reading of Helen Fitzgerald's work. less
