review 1: Well, this really isn't the type of book I would pick up and read. To be honest, I thought it was a vampire story when I first read the description. Guess I should have given it more than a glance. It is a teen book about interpersonal relationship, friendship, and betrayal. With that said, this is the type of book you have to get through the first half to get to the good stuff. The author spends a great deal of time building up the characters and on more than one occasion lost me in the story. Personally, I think too much time was given to the individual characters and not enough time spent on explaining some of the bizarre things that happen in the book. Maybe they are put there to add suspense to the book. For me, they were a distraction, at best, but most of the time i... moret is where the story line lost me. However, I persevered and was rewarded in the latter half of the book. The story line picks up after a tragedy befalls the main character and plunges her into a world strife with twists and turns with some surprises. I got an advanced copy and it really needed some cleaning up, things like typos/grammar and story clean up. Hopefully, some of the things I experienced in my copy will be improved through the editing process for the final copy.
review 2: I received an advance copy of this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaways. I was intrigued by the title and the fact that the main character was Scottish. I was not aware that this was part one of a multiple book series as I don't usually read those, but having said that, I am glad that I did read this book because it was one of the best books I have read lately. The characters were very well drawn, the writing was smooth and easy, the plot was not predictable and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would love to read the follow-up to this book, but I imagine it has not been written yet. At least that is something to look forward to hopefully seeing on a future Goodreads giveaway. I highly recommend this book! less

I could actually see a group or a government pulling a stunt like the one in the book.
It was very exciting. I am glad I won it and can't wait to read the sequel.
It was slow going for me at first but as I continued to read it got better.
Too many overly convient coindences.
