review 1: Mixed feelings. Koch again delivers in his characteristic style of the cynical middle class protagonist who believes themselves to be above everyone. Paul Lohman takes the guise of Marc Schlosser, a disillusioned doctor. There is something intoxicating about his prose and the thoughts of his protagonists, but all in all the novel makes you feel rotten, as the characters make choices and accusations that end with heartache. Could he write something more uplifting next time?
review 2: I found this book riveting. Without giving too much away I couldn't put it down mainly because the motivations and values of all the characters are explored almost like a moral continuum from good to evil. It explores the full human catastrophic condition warts and all.I don't think
... more the story is beyond credibility and I do think the characters are realistic. I also loved "The Dinner" the incredible scope of psychological drama is second to none. This book is a pure meditation of evil and I loved it, devoured it in 2 sittings. It certainly kept me thinking for a long time after I finished it. less
