review 1: First of all, this book is populated mostly with horrible people. Really, truly awful people. I don't have to like the characters to like a book, but if I don't like them, the rest of the book has to be interesting. Instead, this is just a long meander through horrible people doing a whole lot of not much. (Sure, there's a crime, and revenge - but if you're looking for Gone Girl levels of intrigue, this is not your book) Basicly every page highlights people acting stupid, entitled, cruel, and drunk. Otherwise, it's just kind of a snooze-fest.
review 2: This work is a mixed bag for me. There is no question that the narrative is interesting. Once the story is rolling, the soap opera feeling of the plot makes for compelling reading. The author does a good job chron
... moreologically chopping up the sequence of the story and to good effect. The overall value, or positive aspect, of the work however, for me, is nearly nil. Yes, I did read through avidly, anticipating the next developments, but more as one who cannot look away from a train wreck or other unfolding disaster.Character development, on the other hand is really well done. It feels that these are real people, and in more than one character, unfortunately so. There is no main character hero, certainly, and I hope that there is not much of the "protagonist" or narrator in the author himself. In many descriptive passages I had a strong sense of TMI - too much information. Enough already! I know it's the trend, but can we not leave something to the imagination? Please? Just once? Oh wait, the narrator excuses himself on exactly two occasions, opting out of explicit descriptions of medical indications on one of his children on the grounds of privacy. Give me a break; that's the only part of the narrator's character that didn't ring true after everything else in which he spares no detail, no matter how repellent. But if you like a quick read, with no big words, exposing a sleazy soap opera world with one main ne'er-do-well screwing up his life and the lives of those around him, this book is for you.A word of warning: if you do read this work, don't blame me if you can never look at doctors, especially GPs, the same again. less

Love this sicko author!! As good as "The Dinner", Koch is the Brett Easton Ellis of the netherlands.

I'm sensing a "logical and relatable sociopath" theme among Herman Koch's books.
