review 1: I thought this book was great, unexpectedly thrilling with such bizarre twists in the characters and an terrifying glimpse into the mind of a sociopath. The plot basically centers around one night at dinner and something horrific that's happened between the sons of two brothers; one a successful politician about to increase his star, the other, a teacher. Disturbing but definitely held my interest.
review 2: I'm still weighing what I liked and disliked about this book to determine where the scale should rest. I was intrigued by the concept, yet at the same time, I was put off by yet another story of a family of privilege whose offspring commits a crime and the the parents move heaven and earth to shield their child despite the fact the child is completely guilt... morey. Yes, I am a parent and yes, I would do everything to protect my children from harm, but I would like to think that even for a moment, I would have some modicum of surprise, shock, disgust or feeling of failure as a parent rather than just jump to "How do we bury this" - literally and figuratively. I also had questions -- what was Paul's disease? What was Claire's? How can Paul be so violent to his brother, the principal, the man in the bike shop and no one seems troubled by it? Curious and captivating. less
