review 1: Full disclosure, listened to this on audiobook, as I do more and more these days. Looking back on the book, I suppose that I'm not really the target demographic. It could be that this is YA, and probably targeted toward young women instead of men. (And by "Targeted" I'm mostly talking about the marketing, rather than Black's writing.) That said, I really enjoyed it. And it only occurred to me right now as I was sitting down to write about it that this book might not be *for* me, technically. I found it a really take on what has the potential to be a very tired trope - a world where vampires have emerged from the shadows. But I didn't find this cliche at all. Quite the opposite in fact. I found the world very interesting and realistic, and the perspective of the story very ... morepersonal and emotionally charged. I could see this being made into a great movie as well. I'd be surprised if nobody has optioned it yet. So yeah. Absolutely worth your time.
review 2: I originally picked up this book because of the mix of reviews it received. I'm not particularly fond of vampire fiction (through which my opinions were built after reading the Twilight series and Vampire Academy series); not because what I've had the chance to read is horrible--though some are so cliche that I can hardly bear to finish--but because those books really set the tone for future vampire novels. I believe that there is so much more that paranormal books can be; love triangles, bad boy/good girl, and dark-handsome/light-cute boys have been used and reused as basis for plots. They're getting old, and it's rare to find a book that stands out among the others when revolved around one of these factors. The Coldest Girl in Coldtown surprised me. It was written well, made apparent by the fact that it's been a long time since my last great read had vampires in it. The characters were strong and well-rounded; they each had their flaws for sure, but who doesn't? It was realistic and introduced an alter-ego to our world. I fell in love with multiple characters, and the end was bitter-sweet. Well done Holly Black. The ride was brilliant. less
