review 1: I was expecting a quiet, charming southern story, yet the darker threads that border on the gothic with a threatening ghost that amped up the spooky level on this story quickly. Laden with southern characters that are full of charm, and the occasional crazy relative trotted out to the front porch for some ‘atmosphere’, the story is deliciously addictive and hard to put down. Meandering through the spooky bits is a nice, clean romance thread that is all the sweeter for the contrast against the spooky moments, and both Jenny and Gabe are beautifully drawn and developed throughout the story. Jenny was sweet, caring and hides a core of steel: something that she needed in her dealings with and patience for Gabe at the start. He was utterly unlikable at first, and it is to R... moreamsay’s credit that she managed to make the romance and growth of Gabe follow a path that felt possible and real. Easy to understand and wholly self-contained, even though it is part of a series, the story kept me interested and engaged as I read it in one sitting. Beware of the tear-inducing moments at the end, and have tissues ready: it fits the tone and tenor of the novel perfectly, even though it was a bit of a shock. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
review 2: Inn of Last Chance is by Hope Rams. It is a romantic suspense. Jenny Carpenter has put her money and her hard work into redoing The Jonquil House into a bed and breakfast. Now if the weather would clear up, she might have some furniture. They can’t get to Last Chance until the ice melts. The sewing group can’t get out to help her sew curtains either. It was a good thing she purchased a new mattress for the old iron bed left in the downstairs bedroom so at least she will have a place to sleep. She can start a fire in the fireplace and read her book for the Book Club. As she starts to head to the bedroom, a pounding starts on the door. Who in the world could it be on such a nasty night? Gabriel Raintree pounds on the door until Jenny opens it. He demands a place to stay for three months. He doesn’t want to take no for an answer but is forced to at least for tonight. He comes back the next morning and after he turns his ankle, he manages to convince her to let him stay even though she isn’t open. What has she done? Gabe is a writer who writes books about ghosts. What he finds here at The Jonquil House is a ghost. He used to live in the house with his Grandfather and his brother until Luke was accidently shot and died. He can’t remember exactly what happened but he knows Zeph Gibbs has accidently shot Luke, or did he? Someone is causing problems for Jenny. The chicken she is cutting takes off and hits the minister in his lap, the china cabinet falls over almost hitting Gabe and breaking all her dishes, a dead chicken ends up on her cabinet, and the house just won’t heat up. What is going on? Can she hold on until they find out? Can she ignore the attraction she feels for Gabe? less
