review 1: It's 1933 in Joplin Missouri. Kathryn Nash, widowed lives with her sister, Julie and her abusive husband, Vernon. Vernon dictates their lives. Stevens, a Chicago journalist, has fallen for Kathryn. But she is reticent to follow her feelings because of her secret past. Kathryn begins a job in a bookstore in town and gives a young African American teen books to read. This behavior is not acceptable in Joplin Missouri. For black men to fraternize with white women in any way or for any white woman to educate an African American is against the law of the "confederates." Everyone including the Sheriff are afraid of the "confederates"; the judge - executioners in white hoods. They come in the night burn crosses and hang those guilty of breaking their laws. Howard Little... moreson has crafted a compelling story about race relations in the south during the early 20th century. Even though the syntax is, at times awkward and the writing repetitive, that did not make me stop reading. It's nothing that one more good edit wouldn't cure.
review 2: This book was very intriguing, kept me interested the entire way through. There were quite a few grammatical errors throughout (though the author has said the current version had been corrected) and the speaking "language" can be overwhelming with all the slang used. Also, some of the transitions between paragraphs were a little rough and confusing, and I would have to read twice to understand the transition between a dream and reality, for example. I would recommend this book though as an easy read, and I will be getting the follow up book "Two Mississippi" so I can find out what happens to Kathryn. It's that captivating, and Kathryn is a fascinating character. less

Great story! I would have given a 4.5 rating had there been less grammatical errors.
