review 1: Great series. I really enjoy hard science fiction and object quite stringently that fantasy and science fiction have been classified as being part of the same genre. When I go to a bookstore, I hate having to search through all the the wizards and vampires to find something that interests me.The Star Carrier series is great hard science fiction and explores humankind's interaction with alien races with some pretty well constructed battle sequences.
review 2: This is the second book in the “Star Carrier” series by Ian Douglas. There is a massive galactic force toward the center of the galaxy, and it is bent on destroying the human race before we can develop our technology completely. They are known as the Sh’daar, a great empire spanning trillions of light
... more years through unknown space, harboring untold billions of species and preventing them from technologically advancing. They fear “transcendence”, an idea that the humans do not fully understand. Some believe that if our technology grows too much, we will change entirely what it means to be “human”, and leave all the other primitive parts of our culture behind. This is frightening, to some, but to others, technological advancement is not something we can easily give up. Admiral Alexander Koenig, director of the Star Carrier Battlegroup CVS America, is on his way to the galactic core, bent destroying our foe for good.I would claim with my fullest certainty that science-fiction readers would fall in love with this book. It literally contains so much physics; my mind couldn’t take it all. I found myself actually having to take periodic breaks so that I could absorb what Douglas wanted to explain. This book is not for the faint of mind, but for those who can truly understand theoretical physics and are able to grasp the implications of this future technology. I would recommend this novel to anyone who is either good with science fiction, or is interested in theoretical physics as some sort of college major in the future. This book is an incredible read with excellent character development. What I was mostly impressed with was Douglas’ amount of knowledge in physics. He used his experience as a naval officer to effectively emulate what people of his position about four hundred years from now may be dealing with. Also, the aliens are totally crazy-looking and I love that. I only gave it four stars because I couldn't understand very much of what he was talking about half the time: (physics). less

Better than the first one but I'm not sure where he can go from here. Be interesting to find out.

A good second installment. Going to take a break, but will come back for more later.
