review 1: As a second story set in the the Kinsmen universe, I thought it was well-written and had a decent plot. The problem with a lot of short stories, in general, is that it would be difficult to do a lot of world-building, character introduction/development, and weaving in a plot that made sense. This story had the right doses of everything and was such an enjoyable read.Since I have already read the first installment in the Kinsmen series, I was already familiar with the world-building to an extent. The heroine, Claire, was a super-strong (class A) Psycher who had the ability to use psychic powers to sense/disable/kill people. When she was exiled to another planet, she hid her psychic abilities and was able to escape, because otherwise she would have been killed on the spot ... moreby her war enemies. On the new planet, she landed herself with a job in a bionetwork company, surrounded by pschers. Day in and day out, she had to hide her abilities in plain sight, while at the same time, she had to fight her attraction to her boss (and company executive, who was also a class A psycher), Venturo. What I liked about this story was that the heroine felt "real", despite it being all in a fictitious, sci-fi world. She had a problem which she had to hide or else it could mean life or death. However, when faced with challenges, she'd be willing to stand up and fight for herself and for those whom she cared about. Her romantic attraction to Venturo was also interesting. Their combined powers made them such a formidable couple and it was fun to imagine the possibilites. The only thing that I would complain about was the fact that the romantic hookup felt rushed and I would have liked to see more.Yes, hence the issue with short stories - it was never enough!Nonetheless, this was a great story with well-developed plot and characters despite the short length. I enjoyed it a lot.I'd give it 4.5 stars.
review 2: A huge improvement on the first novella of the series. Claire is much more damage female lead but she is interesting to read all the same. While the romance does sound cliché I and happy to report that Ilona and Gordon breathe new life into old conventions.I feel like I need to shout it out from the rooftops. Ilona and Gordon write the best romantic sci-fi out there. Impossibly amazing and inventive and taking old clichés and making them new again. Truly, this is the hallmark of a good author. less
