review 1: I got this book because it was about 'Winter' Wisconsin....only to find out that the author has never been there and just used the village name. That was the first disappointment, as we used to have a cabin there and I incorrectly assumed there would be 'something' about Winter background. Ok so fiction is fiction, that's fine....but the story bogged down in so many areas that I found myself just plodding through it. I noticed other very good reviews, so maybe it was just me, and I couldn't get past the idea that it was really nothing about the real Winter, Wisconsin. Still can't recommend.
review 2: Totally forgot to write a review for this one, though I had quite a bit to say. This book was really annoying in that I think the author had ideas for several ... morebooks and instead of actually writing several books she crammed all her plots into one. For instance the plot regarding the "sideways place" or whatever the heck it was called really only showed up at the beginning and end and for the rest of the book it remained mostly unmentioned. And Christian being able to draw death didn't really further the plot of his visions about the Nazis in Winter. There were too many plots and too many details to keep up with that made this one a little draining to read.In fact let me help you out, Ilsa J. Bick: book about the sideways place, book about boy who draws pictures of death, book about boy who has visions of the life of the last Jew in Winter. Boom. Three books, three times the profit, happy Ilsa, happy readers. less
