review 1: I find At the Mountains of Madness to be a lamentable tale. It portrays some very interesting and mature ideas and is an integral part of the Lovecraft's mythos, but he went into extremely long-winded detail about all the scientific minutiae of the story's Antarctic expedition that the result is a long and boring novella that I could not in good conscious recommend to anyone who is not a Lovecraft fan. For that reason, I am always glad to see a good adaptation of the story.I.N.J. Culbard's graphic novel is one such adaptation. It makes this important tale accessible to those interested in the mythos.
review 2: Disclaimer says I have not read the original, yet. Part of my philosophy on graphic-novelized novels is that in some instances, their graphic equivalents
... more are meant to advertise the bona fide. I think this is one of those. I have read some pretty amazing graphic novels. This was not one of them. The story was good (without saying) but the telling, pace of action, and above all the artwork were not impressive. I will say the treatment preserved much of Lovecraft's typical tone, so good on that note. What was lost was some of the pure horror. This is my main critique of the artwork- it so reserves itself to Lovecraft's tone that it fails in a graphic novel's primary aspiration: give image to the otherwise indescribable. In the end I'm glad to have found this version, because I'm generally a fan of Lovecraft and this has whet my whistle for some more of his horror and mythos, but if an author feels powerfully enough about anything to remake it (same criticism of hollywood, etc), I feel that author should go balls out to make it the most amazing treatment possible and this doesn't seem to be it. less
