review 1: The story of Harry and Gus is one for every girl who has ever thought herself a wallflower. For those who feel that they will never be pretty, vivacious, or winsome enough to get 'that guy'.Augustus Wetherby knows that she will never be considered the 'belle of the ball'. That title is one that has been claimed by her sparkling sister Julia.Augustus, on the other hand, is content in her role as the honest, forthright, and efficient right hand of her widower father.Until...An accident involving the dashing, rakish, and painfully beautiful Harry Fitzroy, Earl of Hargrave. When a fall from a skiddish stallion on an early morning outing results in a concussion and horrific damage to Harry's leg. It falls to Gus to see the young noble back from the brink of death and limb los... mores.Who know that while she has set her sights on seeing Harry recovered, Harry has begun to see Augustus for the wonderful, intelligent, resourceful,...and yes, beautiful young woman that she is.The problem...While Harry's heart may be stamped 'Property of Augustus', his hand has been promised to Julia. The true stars of this read lie both in its pacing and its use of cleaver situational interaction between Gus and Harry. The focus of the story is quite narrow in that respect, with Harry and Gus's relationship and all of its nuances taking center stage for the majority of the read. This is where author Isabella Bradford's flair for complex emotionally motivated character interplay is best highlighted. The gradual building of feelings, deepening of understanding, and establishment of bonds between the two central characters in this story, is a thing of beauty to watch. The one negative in this read can be considered more of an irritation than anything else, and lies in the fact that despite all of the trials and tribulations that Gus goes through in order to prove to Harry that she accepts him in spite of his imperfection; he is never fully able to accept himself, or his limitations. As a result, he loses a bit of the strength of character that he showed earlier in the read. This is a very good 'one sitting' read. It is also first in a companion style series, and may be read as a stand alone or as part of its intended collection
review 2: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.A Wicked Pursuit is a historical romance similar in tone to the books by Elizabeth Rolls (His Lady Mistress; A Compromised Lady; etc). This is a quick read, telling a straight forward story that may be a bit too formulaic. That aside, the main characters are likable and the story has an easy, pleasant pace. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys period romances. less
