The Lost Stars
review 1: Perilous Shield is book 2 of the Lost Stars series by Jack Campbell. I'm just loving this series. It is a shadow series of the Lost Fleet books and it follows the "Bad Guys" of the Syndicate Worlds who have broken away from the Syndicate and are trying to be "Good Guys" except... they've never been "good" in their lives so they are trying to figure it out. Good stuff. The story: General Artur Drakon is in charge of the military forces defending Midway star system against the dreaded Enigma aliens and their former allies of the Syndicate Worlds. The Syndicate is falling apart after their defeat and now Midway must find new allies... but the Syndicate always taught the General to never trust anyone... not even President Gwen Iceni... and she doesn't trust him either but toget... moreher they must form a bond and gain the trust of near-by worlds... through self-interest and not through promises and good wishes. No one believes in that stuff any more.Any problems with the novel? Well... there is a lot of suspicion and violence. Back stabbing seems to be the norm but they are building a world and a system that can work. They are trying, and I enjoy watching it play out. It's a good series.
review 2: The first book in the series was interesting but I think the author has reached the extent of his ability. He is very good atwriting battle scenes but his imagination when it comes to politics is simplistic. The Syndics are just bad bad bad and their CEOs evil. It's way too simple and their is no attempt at explaining the ideology that made the system last for so long. There is also no deep history about the Syndicate. For example anyone who has ever read The Song Of Ice and Fire series is constantly reminded of events that happened 300 years prior to the events of the book. Here there is no attempt at explaining how the Syndics and Alliance came about. It' less
