review 1: this book was a pretty sad book overall. the poor little boy in the book had gone through many different journeys both good and bad. he was very strong physically and mentally. i just felt sorry for this boy. this book had a few slow parts in the middle and if you have read hitlers daughter you would be disappointed. this book however also had many interesting parts to it too. it gave me a little more knowledge on the hard times people had to face during war. over all this was a book that inspired me, put me on a rollar coaster of emotions and taught me many things however i wouldnt read it again.
review 2: This is the first Jackie French I have read - well except for the odd wombat story. I really enjoyed it - just loved the way that Georg transforms from enem
... morey to ally and then when he can no long keep his German background a secret and he explodes with the truth, the family he is living with don't hold it against him. That's the message that I loved, that we are all human, individually loveable beyond the nationalities and groupings we identify with. Georg changes his mind about the Nazis, largely as a product of his own experiences, but the Australians learn that being German does not make you a Nazi, just as Georg learns that looking Asian does not mean you are a Japanese, and that saving life is above national barriers. Labels aren't helpful. I'm not sure that every evacuee child had such a blissful experience as Georg. But French insists that all of her story is based on factual experiences. So I guess I can't really pick on any of that.....Australia in the 40s seems a bit idyllic - yearningly beautiful. less
