Alice-Miranda
review 1: This lightweight, lighthearted series continues to be a literary warm fuzzy that 2nd-4th grade girls will adore. The impossible-to-dislike, irrepressible Alice-Miranda finds herself back at her beloved boarding school, which is a whole different experience now that she's straightened out the lives of everyone there with her genuine warmth & kindness. But things may change when the girls meet the newest student - a girl with a serious attitude problem & a very pushy mother, named Sloane Skyes. Sloane & her unbearable parents are out for one thing during her tenure at the posh school - to meet & befriend as many celebrities & wealthy people as they possibly can. Sloane is obviously hiding something, & her mother may have some very sinister plans indeed, both for the school &... more the boys' school nearby. Can Alice-Miranda save the day while still enjoying getting to participate in the school play being staged this semester? Luckily, she's got a lot of help on her side...
review 2: Well, this one was OK, I think... better than the first one, but not as good as the holiday story in my opinion.Alice Miranda and her friends sign up for a play, ride into the school woods where they find an old 'witch' living in the woods, and a new girl named Sloane comes to their school and stirs things up. Positives: Liked the idea of having an old witch in the woods (I'd say that was the most interesting bit in the whole book!) The fact that even when Sloane was annoying, Alice Miranda did not give in and still wanted to give her a second chance at the end of the book (I really think we need more books that teach the beauty of forgiving!)Jacinta and Millie. I also enjoyed seeing Lucas again (although his friend Sep is kind of boring). Disliked: The ever so perfect robot-child Alice Miranda... I found myself wishing (again) that Alice would behave like a normal kid. Or at least, have normal human faults in her character. Ah well, I don't Jacqueline Harvey is going to make Alice do any mistakes that actually affect her life.I also disliked the idea of a whole school closing down just because a few boys didn't pass their maths tests (I'm assuming it was only Lucas's class that failed because of Sloane's wrongdoing). As horrid as this may sound, I found myself rolling my eyes when I was reading the chapter of Professor Pluss going to see the principal. less
