review 2: Admittedly, this book is only semi-realistic, but it's definitely not fantasy. In addition to apparently being the only child of a couple who must be the richest people on earth, I have yet to meet a child who is always like Alice-Miranda: many kids I know are sweet, kind, polite, well-behaved, & genuinely believe the best of people - but not all the time. However, as an adult who semi-frequently works with kids, I certainly wish that there were more Alice-Mirandas in the world. In her second outing, Alice-Miranda has just successfully completed her first term away from home at boarding school, & now it's time to head back home for a two-week holiday. Alice-Miranda can hardly wait to see her family & all of their various loyal retainers, especially since she's going to be bringing her new friend, Jacinta Headlington-Bear, with her. Things get exciting right away, as her father has brought her aunt's new boyfriend to stay for a week, & he's a famous movie star! On the less positive side, her dear old friends Jasper & Poppy, whose parents both work at Alice-Miranda's family estate, have their cousin Lucas living with them for the foreseeable future, & he is the very definition of hateful. Why is he so mean to everyone, & why is her aunt's boyfriend acting so strange? And who is the strange man with a big car who keeps visiting retired housekeeper Granny Bert - & what is he up to? No doubt Alice-Miranda will solve all of the mysteries, manage to befriend everyone, & have a great time while doing it. A pretty steep feat for a small girl aged only seven-&-a-half. Kids will love her for her friendly good nature, inquisitiveness, & pep. Who knows just what kind of adventures she's in for next? less
