review 1: The book “Alice Miranda on Holiday” is a great book. Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down because the way it is written grabs my attention and it has a great story line. Something new happens on every page. This book was fun to read and I loved it so much that I had to read the whole series. I would definitely recommend other people to read the book. This book is written as a narrative of Alice’s very exciting, challenging and mysterious holiday. It is an adventure and mystery book. It is aimed to please young teenage girls because it involves some mature concepts such as love, complicated relationships and emotions. There is also mature criminal activity involved. The main character in the book is Alice Miranda. She is helpful, kind and caring. She sometimes a... moressumes that everyone wants to be friends with her and she always brings out the best in people by treating them kindly and giving them a chance. In this book she discovers the plot of the criminals and manages to stop them before they succeed. Lucas is Alice’s second cousin. He is very mischievous and he causes trouble for Alice as she tries to unfold the mystery in this book. He starts off as a bully but when he falls in love with Jacinta he becomes nice and helps Alice stop the bad guys.Jacinta is Alice’s new friend. She is very sporty and used to be very selfish. When Alice became friends with her she became kind and thankful of other people.Mrs Oliver is Alice’s family cook. In the book she discovers a fantastic invention and nearly gets kidnapped for it. She is a very kind and considerate person.Cecilia Highton-Smith and Hugh Kennington-Jones are Alice’s parents. They are both very kind hearted and support their daughter Alice a lot. They both come from wealthy backgrounds. Although they are sometimes not with Alice a lot you can tell that they love her very much because of the way they treat her when they are with her. Some other characters in the book are Poppy and Jasper, who are Alice and Lucas’ cousins. There is also Granny Bert, Alice’s best friend Millie, Alice’s Aunt Charlotte and of course the criminals. The criminals in this book are really tough and strong but very dumb. This book’s theme is showing the growing effect of Alice Miranda’s kindness and joy spreading to misunderstood people. It also gives the reader a further background on Alice Miranda’s family after the first book. Its shows how great a cook Mrs Oliver is as well. This book is written in 3rd person and is written in a way that most children can understand and easily read.Jacqueline Harvey is the author of the book. She has written a series of Alice Miranda books. This book is the second in the series. There are currently six books in the series. She has also written a children’s picture book, ‘The Sound of the Sea’. Jacqueline Harvey was awarded ‘honour book’ in the 2006 CBC awards. Jacqueline Harvey also teaches in a girl’s boarding school.
review 2: Unlike the first book in the Alice Miranda series, I really enjoyed this one! This novel was sweet, interesting and I really liked reading about Alice Miranda's home village, her family and the workers who live with them.Alice Miranda goes home for the holidays with her new friend Jacinta Headlington Bear - to Highton Hall, her parents home. Little do they know what surprises lay ahead! There's a rude boy called Lucas who keeps throwing stones at them, and also a movie star (who happens to be a very important figure for Lucas in the very end of the book) - and on top of that; a kidnapping! Alice Miranda and Jacinta go through alot during their two weeks of holidays, and make new friends and discover hidden secrets about AM's home. (Btw,Loved the idea of secret rooms in Highton Hall!) Aside from the main character, I loved everyone else, especially newcomers Lucas Nixon and Lawerence Ridley the movie star. Although Jacqueline Harvey did not emphasise the fact that the main character was soo sweet and innocent as she had in book 1. A good read - I would say this is JHarvey's best Alice Miranda novel to date. less
