review 1: **** This is a lovely, well-written book. The story is about an 11-year-old girl during that confusing time that straddles both childhood and young womanhood. While I'm only giving it three stars, I would give it four stars for younger readers and I would recommend it for teenagers and well-read tweens. The concept, characters, plotting, and almost all of the details are historically plausible and they draw in the reader. The theme of naturalist work and philosophy is compelling. I think this book would serve as a truly great conversation starter between parents and older kids regarding expectations for young women and the choices available to them today versus a century ago.
review 2: The Book The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate is a wonderful story of a young gi
... morerl, Calpurnia Tate, or Callie Vee, and the challenges she faces being a girl at the turn of the century, while aspiring to be a naturalist. I personally thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I’m on the search for others like it. The book is pretty well written, with just a few terms that may be difficult for some to understand. I could not put this book down once I started reading, but I wouldn't recommend it for all. While I am fond of the book, it doesn't have much of a story that includes guys. I would mostly recommend this novel for girls, especially those who are fascinated by nature. I like the way Jacqueline Kelly presents the story, and got caught up in the plot! less

The book is not particularly good in itself, but I like the message it wants to tell.
