review 1: This is a story of an eleven year old girl called Lily who often gets left to look after her half sisters (Bliss and Pixie) and a half brother (Baxter). Her mum Kate is not a very good mum and often leaves Lily alone to look after the children. Kate finds a new boyfriend ‘Gordon’ who does not know she has children and she decides to fly to Spain to be with Gordon. Before leaving Kate leaves Mikey, Baxter and Bliss’s father and her ex-husband a voicemail telling him to look after them while she is away. Mikey calls back after Kate has already flown off and tells Lily to tell Kate not to go anywhere because his on the coach to Glasgow. Lily does not like Mikey and does not tell him that Kate has already left and instead pretends that she has delivered the message. Lily... more then starts to looks after her siblings on her own and she fears other adults will find out. Her teacher, Mr Abbot comes to find out why they have not been attending school and lily tells him they are all ill and her mum has gone to the shops to buy medicine. Lily fears that he will come back with social workers and so decides to pack up and they end up living in the park. They struggle to live in the park with little food and no money and resort to stealing and begging. While Lily was asleep Bliss breaks her leg falling out of a tree. Lily calls the hospital and when the nurse gets Bliss lying down Kate returns. She is charged with child neglect at the police station. Lily gets sent to a children’s home and her siblings get fostered.I did not like the book I felt it was different to most children book which tend to be more entertaining whereas this book covers some real life issues. It talks about dysfunctional parenting it introduces characters who were drug addicts and alcoholics. The parts which talk about the children having to steal were uncomfortable reading. Lily Alone would suit readers between 10-12 and would be best used as an independent reading book although perhaps it can be included into the curriculum to support the PSHE subject when dealing with parental responsibilities and child services.
review 2: Okay, so I read this book a long time ago so I can't remember every detail. But this was one of my favorite books when I was younger (11 years old). Lily's bravery and her taking care of her siblings left me in awe and I loved her character. The story was so gripping, and the adventures were awesome. *SPOILER*-maybe this isn't a spoiler but I hated the way her mother acted, she was so irresponsible as she left them too long but that has nothing to do with the book being bad, I guess. The book is really nice and I will say I cried in the book. I would recommend it to girls between the age of 8-14. less
