review 1: When I heard about this book I was intrigued by the premise of a story of a young girl sold into prostitution written from her point of view. Yes, I expected it to be disturbing and a difficult read do to the subject matter. I was right about that - this story is one of great sadness, trauma and thematically, the exploitation of females that goes on too often in this world. However, I was challenged by this book from the standpoint of consistency and believability. The writer shifts the first person narrative between one where the MC uses childlike euphemisms for many of the acts she is forced to perform. Then the same character uses language and imagery that is much too sophisticated for such a young girl, especially one who has limited access to any education. For me... more, this took away from what could have been a very realistic portrayal of the MC's tragic life.
review 2: This is a very interesting but difficult (about prostitution and slavery, so...) read. I enjoyed the style of writing, and all the poetic bits, for example, where Batuk, the main character, talks to the tree while waiting with her father for a bus that will take her to Mumbai. This made the whole story seem very realistic and authentic, and most importantly very moving. I needed some days to recover after reading this, but have no regret - slavery, forced prostitution and human trafficking (although Batuk was sold to slavery by her father) are one of the biggest problems we face in this century and we need to expose them as much as possible to the wider public. less

A very disturbing (fictionalized) account of life as a child prostitute on the streets of Mumbai.
