review 1: “In 2002 the Author was working with a team from the food and agricultural Organization of the United Nations to study the impact of child labor on education and malnutrition in several countries, and later in India, when he got to India, he had a harrowing experience leaving the airport, and once free from this he joined his team in Mumbai. While touring the poorest areas, he walked dow the famous street of Cages, Faulkland rd. an area of child prostitutes. Before leaving the area he saw a 15 year old girl leaning against her gate, writing in a blue notebook,( a literate prostitute caught his attention) and she became the inspiration for the book, a work of fiction based upon field-workers observations and reports of conditions in which such children survived. Both inte... moreresting and very sad at the same time, I enjoyed the part where her writing became her escape from her cruel environment. The sex scenes were hard to take.
review 2: This book will forever be embedded into your brain. It's about a young girl of 9 being sold by her father to a life of prostitution. Words can't express the emotional distraught I feel after reading. It's very explicit, but I don't know if it wasn't that it would surely take away from the book. I'm glad this is fiction....but I am sure it is similar to many stories of young girls being sold in India and all over the world. My American brain can barely imagine this actually going on. This is a quick read of just over 200 pages and 200 pages is enough. I applaud the author for writing this story, even though it's a very disturbing read. less
