review 1: I found the premise of this book interesting. I had the book in my collection for about a year before I finally picked it up. The reason for this delay is because of a comment on the book that stated this book is in the ranks of Anne Frank. I am sorry, but, that is impossible as this is a fictional account (albeit based on reality) while the story of Anne Frank is a true account.Anyway, I finally stated to read it. I was intrigued by the character of Batuk. She seemed realistic and the author did a good job balancing the present and the past to help understand the character. It is humorous at points, serious in others, and downright sad in others. It has the right blend of emotion to keep a reader engaged.I am not sure about the ending. It seemed to be a quick and unc... moreertain end.I did not love the book, but I did not dislike it either.
review 2: I finished reading this book a few days ago and am still processing what I want to say about it. It is disturbing. And, if your definition of a "good" book is the same as mine - you don't stop thinking about long after you finish reading it - it was a "good" book. However, the horrors of child prostitution and abuse of power are not topics i "enjoy" being exposed to. I suppose it is a book that needed to be written and I applaud the author for using the proceeds to try to better the lives of children. While the author is very accomplished in many fields, this was his first novel. I think the writing disturbed me as much as the story. At times it was brilliant and at times it was clearly reaching hard to be brilliant. All in all I found the telling of the story uneven.I can't recommend not reading it. But, if you do, be prepared to be disgusted. less

Very well written, but difficult to get through - extremely disturbing subject matter.

No child should be subject to the horrors of prostitution.
